Chapter 20: Addressing Urbanization |
As you have probably noticed, it often happens with sociology
that issues are interrelated, and although you speak of them
separately, very few of them actually exist separately. An issue
as complex as urbanization involves many other issues, such
as those of race and stratification, or those of economics.
Indeed, the problems of urbanization require leaders with nimble
and well-rounded minds.
Further acquaint yourself with the challenges of urbanization.
Start by reading Urbanization: The Challenge for the Next
Century at www.worldbank.org/fandd/english/0696/articles/0180696.htm
Then imagine you are running for mayor in a major city. Write
a ten-minute speech in which you outline what you would do
to help solve the problems of urbanization. Deliver your speech
to the class, then take a vote to see who your classmates
would elect mayor.
