Chapter 16: Advertising: Tricks of the Trade
|
As a high school student, you may think the growth of large
corporations has little to do with youand you would be
both right and wrong. Most corporations make their fortunes
by persuading many people to spend a small amount of money.
Everywhere you go you are exposed to advertising, and many advertisements
target people your age. So while you may not spend a lot of
money, where you spend it is important, because many others
like you may have been persuaded to do the same thing.
Understand advertising. Begin your research by reading quotations
about advertising at the Department of Advertising at the
University of Texas at Austin at advertising.utexas.edu/research/quotes/Q100.html#Subliminal
and advertising.utexas.edu/research/quotes/Q100.html#Manipulation
Once you have completed your research, choose several advertisements
from magazines or newspapers, and prepare a presentation in
which you explain what makes these advertisements work. Who
do the ads target? How might they appeal to these groups?
Deliver your presentation to the class.
